A group of students and teachers from Berwickshire High School have been learning the art of Bee Keeping thanks to support from Marchmont Makers Foundation and the Marchmont Estate. The young people are studying for SVQ level 5 in Bee Keeping including building and maintaining hives, researching pollinators and studying the workings of these life saving insects.
"A huge thank you to The Marchmont Team for their continued support in making this happen. Today was the first student hive inspection at Marchmont. The learning experience consisted of a carousel of two parts. Bob led a brilliant session about the role of the gamekeeper and we led an inspection of the hives. So many brilliant learning opportunities, the students really enjoyed hearing from Bob and we were excited to find that the recently caught swarm had an egg laying queen and another hive was busy making honey". Looking forward to summer 2023 we hope to welcome a student artist from Berwickshire High School to paint a mural on the equipment store for the bee keeping project.
Berwickshire High School is now the only school in Scotland to include a bee keeping qualification as part of their curriculum. We are happy to support this important work and encourage more young people to get involved with sustainability as part of their education.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hugo Burge.
